Amsterdamsche Football Club, also known as AFC Ajax, or simply Ajax, is an official football club based in Amsterdam, Netherlands. The club is one of the three clubs that stand out in the Dutch national football league (know as Eredivisie), along with Feyenoord and PSV. Ajax is one of only five teams that have earned the right to keep the European Cup and to wear the badge of honor. The team won the European Cup three years in a row (1971-1973) and once again in 1995. They completed The Treble in 1972, by winning the Dutch Eredivisie, KNVB Cup, and the European Cup. They are the only team till today that has kept the European Cup and accomplished the European Treble. Ajax is one of the only two teams to win the The Treble and the Intercontinental Cup in the same season (1971-1972). The team is also one of only three clubs to have won all three main European trophies at least once (the European Cup, the European Cup Winners' Cup and the UEFA Cup). The team's customary home kit includes a white jersey with a vertical red stripe on the chest and back, white shorts, and white socks. Ajax initially played in a black uniform with a red ribbon tied around the players' waists, but that uniform was later exchanged by a red and white striped shirt and black shorts. The team was forced to change their colors once again to their current kit because Sparta Rotterdam already had the same uniform. |
