The China PR national football team is the national football team of China and is managed by the Chinese Football Association. The China national team was established in 1924 and became a member of FIFA in 1931-1958, and then from 1979. They have been recurrent contenders for the Asian Cup, most recently finishing in second place at the AFC 2004. However, China failed to score a goal in their first appearance at the 2002 FIFA World Cup. Qualifying for the competition has been considered the greatest achievement in China's football history. After the transfer of control of Hong Kong from the United Kingdom in 1997, and Macau from Portugal in 1999, these two regions have continued to have their own teams, which are known as "Hong Kong, China" and "Macau, China". Since football is very popular in China, national team accomplishments are considered a source of national pride. More than 300 million people watched broadcasts of China's 2002 World Cup games and a shocking 170 million new television sets were bought by citizens in order to watch their national team's World Cup debut. There were also over 250 million viewers for the 2004 Asian Cup finals, which was the largest sports audience for a singe sport in the country's history. The team is often referred to as Team China, the National Team or Guozu ("national foot"). The national team's customary home kit includes a red jersey, red shorts, and red socks.
