Dimitar Ivanov Berbatov is a Bulgarian football player. He is positioned as a striker for Manchester United and in addition is captain of the Bulgarian national football team. Berbatov was born on January 30th, 1981 in Blagoevgrad, Bulgaria. His father was a football player on the local team Pirin Blagoevgrad. Berbatov's football career also began at the Pirin Blagoevgrad club, where he played until he was noticed by famous scout and coach Dimitar Penev.
Berbatov moved to CSKA Sofia at the age of 17. He played for CSKA in the Bulgarian A PFG (top devision of Bulgarian football) between 1998 and 2001. In 1999 he became more recognized when he scored 14 goals in 27 league games and won the Bulgarian National Cup. Berbatov joined Premier League side Tottenham Hotspur in 2006. He managed to score two goals in two minutes in his first game on the team against Birmingham City. After many rumors, Berbatov transferred to Manchester United on September 1st, 2008. He will wear the number 9 shirt worn by Louis Saha in the past. Berbatov scored his first two goals for Manchester United in their 3–0 victory against Aalborg BK in the Champions League group stage on September 30th 2008. He scored his first league goal for Manchester United on October 18th 2008, in a game against West Bromwich Albion. Berbatov sponsors many children's charities and supports five care homes in his native Bulgaria. He also has plans to open a football school in his hometown. |
