Fernando José Torres Sanz, also known as "The kid" (El Niño) is a Spanish football player who plays for Liverpool and for the Spanish national team. Torres, born in Madrid, Spain on March 20th 1984 became interested in football at a young age and by the time he was five had already joined his first team, Parque 84. At the age of eleven he impressed the Atlético Madrid scouts and joined the club. Torres advanced through the youth ranks and won his first important youth championship in 1998 (at the age of 14). That same year he was also voted the best football player in Europe for that age-group. Torres signed his first contract with Atlético Madrid in 1999. During the first year he played for the youth team, but later advanced to the Honor Division when he was 16. When Torres was only nineteen, he was also named Atlético Madrid's club captain. Torres joined Liverpool in 2007 after the club paid their highest transfer fee in order to sign him. In his first season with the club he became their first player to score more than 20 league goals in a season since Robbie Fowler in 1995–96. In addition to Liverpool, Torres also plays for the Spanish national football team. He made his first appearance for the team against Portugal in 2003. Ever since he joined the team, he has participated in three main tournaments; UEFA Euro 2004, 2006 FIFA World Cup, and UEFA Euro 2008.
