The national football team of the Netherlands is called "the Netherlands national football team" and is referred to as "Holland" in many countries. The team played its first game at the World Cup final competition in 1934 and came back again in 1938. From that moment, the Netherlands national team entered the world of football. The team made it to two consecutive World Cup finals (in 1974 against West Germany and in 1978 against Argentina), but lost both of the games. However, the Netherlands team won Euro 88 and in the 1970's at the highest point of success the team was famous for its accurate passing and was therefore nicknamed "Clockwork orange". At that time the team was also well known for its skills in Total Football, in which every player is comfortable in any other position. Historically, the national color of the Netherlands is Orange; therefore the team's home shirt is bright orange. This color originated from the Dutch founding father William of Orange- Nassau's coat of arm. The team wears orange shirts, white shorts and orange socks at home games and therefore their nickname is "Oranje" in Holland. The present Dutch away shirt is Nassau blue, with a small trim on the front of the shirt containing the colors of the Dutch flag. Since 1996 the national team's kit provider has been Nike and they are supposed to continue sponsorship until at least 2018. Netherlands national football team kits are available in all sizes, including junior kits, and accessories. |
