Football shirts are part of the standard equipment worn by players during football matches. They are also known as a "uniform" or "strip".

The codes of the football, (also called “soccer” in North America) specify the required kit a player must wear. It is forbidden to wear anything that dangers players and other participants at a football match.
Football kits must be up to a certain standard: the size of logo, displayed numbers and player names, and off course the official logos of the various leagues and competitions are some examples. The codes of football also state that in a match between two teams with similar color kits the home team is allowed to wear the home kit, while the visitors wear the alternative one or their away shirts.

Each football player has a number on the back of his shirt, this identifies him during the game. In the past, for a long period of time, players had to wear numbers between 1 and 11. Each used number was parallel to the players’ field position; the goalkeeper wore the number 1 and the striker wore the number 11. Nowadays, players can wear any number they choose, but they have to keep the same number during the whole season. Professional football clubs display the players' last names on the back of their foot ball shirts, above the jersey number.
