The Republic of Ireland national football team represents the Republic of Ireland in international football tournaments. The team is managed by the Football Association of Ireland and presently plays home games at Croke Park stadium in Dublin.
The national team made its first appearance at the 1924 Olympic Games, where they made it to the quarter finals. The team was named the Irish Free State between 1924 and 1936, but from then until 1953 it was referred to as simply Ireland by the FAI. They started using their current name, "The Republic of Ireland national football team", in 1953.
The team had its most successful player under the direction of Jack Charlton and his successor Mick McCarthy. They qualifying for Euro 88, reached the quarterfinals of the
1990 World Cup and made it to the last sixteen at both the 1994 and 2002 World Cups.
The Republic of Ireland was the first team from outside the UK to defeat England on home ground, at a game played at Goodison Park, in 1949. The National team reached the quarterfinals of the European Nations' Cup in 1964.
Team's customary home kit includes a green jersey, white shorts, and green socks. The team numbers on the home shirts are white with an orange trim. Their current away kit consists of a white jersey, green shorts, and white socks. The team numbers on the away shirts are green with an orange trim. They have also played in other away colors, including an orange shirt in the 1990's.
