The team who represents Italy in international football competitions is called the Italian national football team. Italy's national team is very successful and is one of the top teams in international football. The teams victories include four World Cups, which is only one less than Brazil. In addition the team also won the European Championship in 1968, two Central European International Cups, eight World Military Cups, and even an Olympic Gold Medal. The Italy National football team won the 2006 FIFA World Cup and is therefore the present World Champions.

The Italian National team is frequently called Azzurri, because of the blue (Azzurro in Italian) jersey that is used by the team and other Italian teams and athletes. The blue is linked to the empire which united Italy in 1860, "House of Savoia". At every game you could hear the Italian fans singing "Forza Azzurri". The blue shirts have been worn by the team from the beginning. The home kit consists of a blue jersey and socks, with white shorts. However, the away kit includes a white jersey and sock with blue shorts. On the uniform there is always a patch with the colors of the Italian flag.

Many well known players have put on the Italian jersey and won numerous games, including Paolo Maldini, Roberto Baggio, Paolo Rossi,  Franco Baresi, and Giuseppe Bergomi.
