The Japan national football team is the national football team of Japan and is managed by the Japan Football Association. The team is commonly referred to by the fans and media as Nippon Daihyo (which means "Japanese representatives") or Okada Japan. Although the team does not have an official nickname, it is frequently known by the name of the manager. For example, under management of Ivica Osim, the team is known as Osim Japan. Lately the team has been referred to as the Blue Samurai.
Japan's first major success in international football was when the team won the bronze medal at the 1968 Summer Olympics in Mexico City. This outcome brought increased recognition to the sport in Japan.
The team has qualified for the last three World Cup finals and has won the Asian Cup trophy three times. On July 21st 2006, Bosnian Ivica Osim, who formerly coached Yugoslavia and most recently JEF United Ichihara Chiba, took over as coach for the team, following Zico, who had coached Japan from 2002 until the end of Japan's 2006 FIFA World Cup campaign. Osim became ill in late 2007 and he was therefore replaced by Takeshi Okada, who had led Japan to the 1998 World Cup.
The national team's customary home kit includes a blue jersey, white shorts, and blue socks. The uniform does not correspond with its national flag, although Japan previously wore white and red which matched its flag. Their current away kit consists of a white jersey, blue shorts, and white socks.
