The family has been living in Romford for the past few years. Cole was a child sensation and received much national media attention. As a schoolboy, he notably scored 7 of the 8 goals the England youth team scored against Spain in one game. He was a product of the well know West Ham United youth system and was publicized as the newest prospect in English football with Manchester apparently offering £10 million for him to sign with them at the young age of 16. Cole was also part of West Ham's victorious Youth Cup winning squad in 1999, defeating Coventry City 9–0 in the final. In 2003, Cole transferred to Chelsea with a vision of establishing himself in the England national team. However, because of the strong competition for places at the club, he struggled at first to hold down a place in the team for both England and Chelsea under Claudio Ranieri. Cole has won many awards in the past years including Chelsea Player of the Year award in 2008. |
