Diego Armando Maradona is a former Argentine football player who played for the Argentine national team. In 2000 Maradona received the FIFA Player of the Century award along with Pelé after finishing in first place in a FIFA internet survey for the best player of the 20th century.
Maradona won many trophies throughout his career while playing for Boca Juniors, FC Barcelona and SSC Napoli. While playing on the national team he competed in four FIFA World Cup competitions and his international career included 91 caps and 34 goals. He led the Argentina national team to its victory over West Germany in the 1986 World Cup, in which he earned the Golden Ball award as the competition's best player. Maradona also scored both goals in their victory over England in the quarter-final of the 1986 tournament. The first goal is notorious and is referred to as the "Hand of God", while the second goal was an impressive 60 meter weave through six England players, which is known as "The Goal of the Century".
Maradona is also considered one of football's most controversial figures. He was suspended for 15 months in 1991 after he failed a doping test for cocaine in Italy, and then again for an ephedrine test during the 1994 World Cup in USA.
After retiring from football in 1997, Maradona suffered ill health, weight gain, and cocaine abuse. However, a stomach stapling operation helped control his weight gain and after overcoming his cocaine addiction, he became a TV host in Argentina.
