Ronaldo de Assís Moreira is a Brazilian football player frequently called Ronaldinho or Ronaldinho Gaucho. He was first given the nickname Ronaldinho (meaning little Ronaldo) because he was repeatedly the youngest and the smallest player in youth club tournaments. However, he is more often called "Ronaldinho Gaúcho" in Brazil, in order to differentiate between him and Ronaldo, who was already called Ronaldinho. Once Ronaldo moved to Europe he only went by his first name, allowing Ronaldinho to drop the "Gaúcho" and remain Ronaldinho. Ronaldinho was born on March 21st 1980 in Porto Alegre, Brazil. His football skills were very impressive at a young age, and he was identified as a future star at the 1997 under-17 world championship in Egypt, in which he scored two goals on penalty kicks. Ronaldinho started his career in the youth team at the Porto Alegre club Grêmio, where his passion for goal scoring was quickly demonstrated and his career soon generated interest as a result of his exceptional ball control and ability to score. Ronaldinho also joined the Brazilian national team in 1999. In 2001 he transferred from Grêmio to Paris Saint-Germain FC. In July 2003, FC Barcelona acquired Ronaldinho for £21 million whom which he played with until he signed a three year contact with A.C. Milan in 2008. Ronaldinho has won many individual titles including; FIFA World Player of the Year (in 2004 and 2005) , European Footballer of the Year (in 2005) and FIFPro World Player of the Year awards (in 2005 and 2006). |
