Steaua is one of the most victorious Romanian football teams. They won many European tournaments and 23 Romanian Liga I (Romanian football league) championships. The team was the first eastern European team to win the UEFA Champions League in 1986. Steaua was previously known as the Romanian Army sports club. However, the football division separated from the club in 1998. At the moment, the team plays their home games at the Stadionul Ghencea, a stadium owned by the Ministry of National Defense, which is the teams only connection to their Army past. The football stadium is located in South-Western Bucharest and was opened on April 9th 1974 when the team played a friendly game against OFK Beograd. The team has never had a set playing kit. However, they often used the mixture of red jerseys, blue shorts and red socks throughout time. The team has also worn uniforms that were completely red, completely blue and also red and blue striped jerseys through the 1960’s and 1970’s. The team’s home kit currently includes red and blue striped shirts, blue shorts and blue socks. Their away kit consists of a yellow jersey, yellow shorts, and yellow socks. Steaua's uniform has been produced by Nike since 2002, after a long deal with Adidas. The team’s jerseys have been sponsored by CitiFinancial Since September 2007, with contract worth 1.3 million Euros. |
