The Wales national football team represents Wales in international football tournaments and is managed by the Football Association of Wales, the governing body for football in Wales. The national team has been nicknamed "The Dragons". They are one of the oldest national teams in the world, having played its first competitive game in 1876 against Scotland in Glasgow. However, the team has not qualified for a major international tournament since 1958. Although Wales is part of the United Kingdom, the team has always had its own representative team that plays in all the major professional competitions, although they do not compete in the Olympic Games as the committee only recognizes the United Kingdom. The team's first game against England was in 1879, and in 1882 Wales competed against Ireland for the first time, winning 7–1. Wales made it to the quarter finals of the World cup in 1958, but were defeated by Brazil1-0. Wales was placed in Group 4 for qualification games at the 2010 FIFA World Cup alongside Germany, Russia, Finland, Azerbaijan and Liechtenstein. The team plays most of their home games at the Millennium Stadium in Cardiff. The stadium was constructed in 1999 on the location of the old National Stadium, known as Cardiff Arms Park. Wales' first football game at the Millennium Stadium was against Finland in March 2000. The team's customary home kit includes a red jersey, red shorts, and red socks. Their current away kit consists of a yellow jersey, yellow shorts, and yellow socks. |
